The code of points system awards points based on the frequency and difficulty of jumps, sequences and spins performed, judged by a technical panel. This is different from the original holistic assessment of performance and routine (skill, dance etc), with an evergrowing emphasis on technical elements. Sporting committees have made changes to national selection criteria for teams in accordance with this shift.
Additionally, this shift in judging is clearly reflected in the results of the Olympics with Eteri Tutberidze's skating champions in Olympics: Anna Shcherbakova, Alexandra Trusova and more, who are the youngest in competition, breaking world records with their stunts. They have been praised for their intense training and skills but have been criticised for their lack of performative, artistic elements in their Olympic routines, injuries sustained (Shcherbakova required extensive knee surgery) and scandals (Kamila Valieva's failed drug test). This has been starkly contrasted against older, revered skaters like Yuna Kim, who have been championed for their overall performance, technique and performances for years.
